The start of a new school year is a time for getting together with friends and partying. There will be back-to-school parties, football games and rallies, Homecoming celebrations, and Halloween parties. These festivities are a huge part of the fall semester.
But as much fun as these events can be, they can also be dangerous. Parties can get out of hand pretty quickly, and it may be easier to get out of control yourself if you’re not careful. With a few preparations, you can enjoy all of your school celebrations worry-free. Here are 5 tips to help with that:
1. Use the Buddy System
Plan to go to school events with a group of friends. Stick together and watch out for one another. Groups are less likely to be approached by predators, and can ensure that if one person is having an issue, they won’t be left alone while another goes for help.
2. Plan Ahead of Time
Work out a plan with your friends for the night. Decide what time you’re going, what time you’re leaving, where to meet if you get separated, what you’re doing after the event, and what to do if someone needs to leave early. By knowing you have each other’s backs, it will be a more enjoyable evening for you all.
3. Designate a Driver
If you’re attending a party where alcohol will be served (and you’re 21, of course), designate a driver. Choose someone from your party who will stick to nonalcoholic beverages throughout the event and drive everyone else home safely. You can start a pool, and alternate drivers at events throughout the year.
4. Avoid Open Drinks
Do not accept a drink from an open can, punch bowl, soda bottle, or other open container. Stick with drinks from a fresh unopened can or bottle. Open drinks are too easy for someone to spike with any number of substances.
5. Don’t Accept Drinks from a Stranger
Accepting a drink from a stranger can cause the same dangerous issues as accepting an open-container drink. Either choose your own drink, or have a trusted friend bring one back for you.
These 5 steps will help you and your friends stay safe at your school events, and allow you to have more fun. Now go and enjoy yourself!
